Help Us Elevate the Voices of Alaska Fishermen

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your prior support of Alaska Marine Conservation Council. 30 years ago, a group of forward-thinking Alaskan harvesters formed AMCC on the belief that fishermen and healthy marine ecosystems – together – are vital to the economic, social and ecological fabric of Alaska. As a lifelong fisherman myself, I can say that the need and support for that vision is as powerful as ever.

Thank you for standing alongside three decades of proud fishermen, subsistence harvesters, coastal residents and allies that have made up AMCC’s board, staff and members. We share a deep commitment to the health and resilience of Alaska’s oceans, fisheries and fishing traditions. Together, we advocate for responsible, proactive, ecosystem and knowledge-based fisheries management policies that can sustain a strong fishing future for Alaska.

Over the past 30 years, we have advanced a critical effort to improve protections for the Bering Sea’s vast habitat resources; helped to secure a permanent ban on oil and gas lease sales in Bristol Bay and the southeast Bering Sea to protect some of Alaska’s most productive fishing grounds; supported passage of the Young Fishermen's Development Act to address the barriers to young fishermen pursuing fishing as a viable career and successfully sought protections for Pacific halibut by advancing meaningful bycatch reduction measures in the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands. We have supported countless other threads of advocacy and conservation to preserve the fabric of Alaska’s marine ecosystems and ways of life, and are committed to continuing that mission.

As we embark on our next 30 years, we acknowledge the road ahead for advancing our goals is ever more challenging. This is why it’s more important than ever that we build our movement of hard-working and conscientious folks who share our values and are engaged with our efforts. Can you can help us do that?

“Local fishermen bring valuable and unique perspectives to fishery management decisions. I support AMCC because they are committed to making sure fishermen have a strong voice in the conversations that impact our livelihoods

and the future of our families.”

Erik Velsko

Homer, AK

“I support AMCC because they work hard to make the science behind fishery policies easier for community-based fishermen to access and understand. They help ensure that fishermen can play a real role in the decisions impacting our livelihoods and communities.”

Kinsey Brown

Cordova, AK

“Ocean harvesters hold intimate knowledge of the ecosystems in which they live and work. I support AMCC because they value this knowledge which can be a valuable asset for managing fisheries for the long term and empowering local stewards in communities across Alaska.”

Together, we will champion stronger habitat protection measures, defend Pacific halibut bycatch reductions and advance solutions for fisheries management in a changing marine environment. Together, we will lift up the many voices of Alaska’s diverse fishermen and marine stewards in service of Alaska’s incredible fishery resources.

Thank you again for your support of our efforts to keep Alaska’s wild fisheries wild, oceans healthy and fishing opportunities thriving in our coastal communities.

With gratitude,

Michelle Stratton

Executive Director
