Celebrate Culture & Heritage
Empower community and next-generation ocean stewards through celebration of Alaska communities, foods, and connections.

Current Priorities
1. Elevating Community Voices and Lived Experience
We focus on telling the stories of fishing families, communities, and stewards whose knowledge and experience shape Alaska’s fisheries and coastal cultures.
2. Fostering Intergenerational Knowledge Sharing
We prioritize connections between generations to support continuity, mentorship, and shared leadership within fishing communities.
3. Strengthening Local Food Connections and Cultural Ties
Strong leadership is collective. We prioritize collaboration across fishing communities, rural communities, businesses, and conservation partners to advance shared priorities.
Key Strategies & Activities:
-
Produce and publish community-centered storytelling: Create blogs, op-eds, profiles, and narratives that elevate fishing communities, including the biannual Alaska Young Fisherman’s Almanac and intergenerational stewardship stories.
-
Create spaces for intergenerational learning and leadership: Facilitate workshops, events, and forums that connect generations and encourage participation in leadership development and training opportunities.
-
Amplify food security practices and cultural traditions: Share community-driven food security efforts, seafood stories, recipes, and cultural traditions that connect fisheries to place and people.
-
Support leadership development and community networks: Support initiatives such as the Alaska Fishermen’s Network, Fishing Fellows, and other community-led efforts that strengthen long-term leadership.
-
Collaborate with creative partners: Work with local artists, chefs, and cultural practitioners to create content and events that expand reach and deepen connection.
-
Grow and diversify audiences: Expand engagement with fishing families and industry supporters while serving as a trusted source for clear explanations of complex fisheries issues.
