Fisheries Access

It is becoming increasingly difficult for Alaska’s community-based fishermen to make a livelihood and for young people and other coastal community residents wanting to enter the fishing industry to do so.

To better define the problems of access in Alaska’s fisheries and to offer informed solutions moving forward, AMCC’s Graying of the Fleet research project will examine social, cultural, economic and geographic factors impacting barriers to entry and sustained, local participation in fisheries in the Bristol Bay and Kodiak Island regions.

AMCC is also working to create spaces for conversation among young fishermen about the barriers they face when entering the fishing industry. The Young Fishermen’s Network comprises a group of such fishermen who communicate online and in person at special events about issues and experiences in their daily lives.
