The Alaska Marine Conservation Council, a savvy fish-focused nonprofit, is seeking a bright, creative, motivated, and charismatic individual to serve as our Development and Engagement Director. This fast-paced, multi-faceted position is responsible for developing and executing innovative and successful strategies to engage supporters in AMCC’s work through financial support, advocacy, and volunteerism. AMCC is continuing to carve out a unique niche in the fisheries landscape and this position will play a key leadership role in catalyzing the organization’s growth and development. This position reports to the Executive Director but works closely with all of the AMCC staff team as well as board members, contractors, and partners. We are seeking an individual with an interest in long-term growth with our entrepreneurial organization.

Position Requirements include:

  1. More than 5 years of work experience in fundraising, communications, marketing, and/or outreach/organizing.

  2. Demonstrated experience and success overseeing individual giving programs and cultivating donors.

  3. Experience and ability to develop effective print and electronic communications and marketing materials.

  4. Experience organizing successful events that engage supporters and generate revenue.

  5. Demonstrated leadership experience and the ability to oversee and work collaboratively with other staff, board members and contractors, to engage volunteers and be a team leader.

  6. Ability to successfully work with databases, word processing and design programs.

  7. Ability to determine meaningful and achievable goals and meet them.

  8. High level of energy, motivation and dedication to creativity and innovation.

  9. Extremely well-organized and detail-oriented and able to successfully and efficiently manage a significant workload.

  10. Superb writing and editing skills.

  11. Passion and commitment to AMCC’s mission, vision and approach.

  12. Ability to operate the AMCC vehicle (acceptable driving record) and lift objects over 25lbs.

  13. Ability to travel within and out of state and work on some evenings and weekends when needed.

The salary for this exempt full-time position is D.O.E. and includes a unique benefits package with generous vacation leave, flex holidays, retirement, dental coverage, flexible work weeks and individual medical coverage. We are an organization that seeks to accommodate an active outdoor lifestyle, families, and fishermen. The position is based out of AMCC’s Anchorage office and start date is as soon as possible but no later than February 2016.

Essential functions and responsibilities:

Development, Fundraising & Donor Engagement: ~65%

  1. Play a key role in implementing AMCC’s 2015-2018 Fundraising Plan to help increase and diversify organizational funding.

  2. Oversee and expand AMCC’s individual giving program and business membership programs. This includes executing regular renewal mailings, annual and special appeals, building relationships with donors and business partners, making donor asks, and ensuring appropriate acknowledgment.

  3. Oversee AMCC’s engagement in the Pick. Click. Give. PFD contribution program including developing and executing an annual campaign plan to increase the number of donors and total donation amount through the program.

  4. Oversee AMCC’s annual cash raffle including securing the needed permits and ensuring regulations are followed.

  5. Play a lead role in executing fundraising events including ensuring a successful revenue strategy and community/partner support.

  6. Work with Executive Director to identify grant opportunities, develop grant applications, and ensure proper grant administration.

  7. Serve as a staff liaison for the Board of Directors Fundraising Committee and all Board related fundraising.

Communications, Marketing, and Engagement: ~35%

  1. Website, e-newsletter and social media: Oversee AMCC’s online and via social media to ensure effective communication that engages supporters and partners.

  2. Print materials: Work with staff to develop compelling materials that describe and report on AMCC’s work including an annual report. Coordinate production of AMCC’s print newsletter 2-3 times per year.

  3. Earned media: Work with staff to ensure steady and strategic presence of AMCC in the media. Report on quality and quantity of AMCC media presence.

  4. Advocacy & organizing: Work with program staff to develop effective strategies for generating comments and engagement on other action items.

  5. Volunteers: Oversee volunteer engagement in AMCC’s efforts and events, build AMCC’s team of volunteers and regularly identify opportunities for engagement. Appropriately acknowledge and thank volunteers.

  6. Staff oversight: Effectively oversee a communications/administrative coordinator who will assist with carrying out the above duties including managing the membership database, inputting data, carrying out the raffle and events, managing print jobs, etc.

Position #2: Local Seafood Sales & Operations Manager 

The Alaska Marine Conservation Council is seeking a fish-loving individual to serve as our Local Seafood Sales and Operations Manager. This new position is responsible for scaling up AMCC’s local seafood sales programs and creating a newly branded seafood hub. Our Catch of the Season community supported fishery and Kodiak Jig Seafoods brand have been successfully selling seafood caught by Alaskans, to Alaskans for over four years. The Manager will have the vision and capability to grow these programs into a cohesive and high-functioning social enterprise of AMCC’s that generates social, environmental, and financial impact. This position reports to the Executive Director and works closely with an array of fishing and processing partners, other staff members, as well as contractors. We are seeking an individual with an interest in long-term growth with our entrepreneurial organization.

Position Requirements include:

  1. More than 5 years of work experience (or educational equivalent) in sales, marketing, and operations preferably in the food or seafood business.

  2. Demonstrated understanding of Alaska’s fisheries and seafood markets.

  3. Experience and comfort working with spreadsheets and developing financial projections.

  4. Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  5. Demonstrated leadership experience and the ability to oversee and work collaboratively with other staff, board members and contractors, to engage volunteers and be a team leader.

  6. A self-starter with the ability to determine meaningful and achievable goals and meet them.

  7. High level of energy, motivation and dedication to creativity and innovation.

  1. Retail/community supported fishery: Develop and implement strategies to expand the number of communities served and increase subscribers, as well as retain current subscribers.

  2. Wholesale sales: Develop and implement strategies to better serve current clients and increase sales of Kodiak Jig Seafoods cod and rockfish products.

  3. New business lines: Pilot and test the viability of new lines of business such as mobile food sales at events.

  4. Oversee all aspects of sales, marketing, and logistical operations to successfully carry out retail and wholesale sales.

  5. Forecast and monitor financial performance of seafood sales to meet or exceed targets.

  6. Work with a communications firm to develop a compelling brand identity for the Alaska Community Seafood Hub; ensure implementation of the new brand identity.

  7. Develop and track meaningful social, environmental, and financial growth goals for the program.

  8. Build and maintain relationships with fishermen and processors to increase supply options and support a broader base of fishing businesses. Successfully communicate with supply partners about the program.

  9. Oversee and put in place systems to ensure high product quality standards and manage any issues as they arise.

  10. Serve as a spokesperson with the media and promote the program through local events, speaking engagements, etc.

  11. Oversee and delegate tasks to a support staff member and contractors.

The Alaska Marine Conservation Council is hiring a Communications and Outreach Coordinator. This multi-faceted position supports important communications, fundraising, and administrative functions of our small, unique non-profit as well as our local seafood sales programs. This works closely with all of the AMCC staff team as well as board members, contractors, and partners. This position has the potential for long-term growth with the organization and would be a part of a supportive, passionate, and dynamic staff team.

A successful candidate will posses the following skills and traits:

  1. A bachelor’s degree.

  2. Minimum of 2 years experience in fundraising, communications, marketing, outreach, customer service, and or operations/administration.

  3. A self-starter with a high level of energy, motivation and dedication to creativity and innovation.

  4. Extremely well-organized and detail-oriented.

  5. Strong writing ability.

  6. Passion and commitment to AMCC’s mission, vision and approach.

  7. Ability to successfully work with databases, word processing and design programs.

  8. Ability to travel within and out of state.

  9. Ability to lift over 30 lbs., and operate the AMCC vehicle (i.e. an acceptable driving record).

This position is ideally full-time but could be ¾ time for the right candidate that needed a more flexible schedule. Salary is D.O.E. and includes AMCC’s generous vacation, retirement, dental coverage, flex holidays, and personal health insurance. The non-exempt position is based out of AMCC’s Anchorage office and start date is as as soon as possible but no later than end of February/early March.

Duties include:

Communications and Outreach: ~35%

  1. Website, e-newsletter and social media: Work with the Development and Engagement Director to enhance AMCC’s social media presence and send out effective e-newsletters. Maintain the AMCC website and work with staff on content that is accurate and effective.

  2. Print materials: Work with program staff to develop compelling materials that describe AMCC’s work. Assist staff with event flyers or promotional materials, advertising, or special projects as needed included development of reports including design, content editing etc. Serve as a liaison with graphic designers and printers.

  3. Outreach events: Support an AMCC presence at important outreach events such as Salmonstock, Renewable Energy Fair, Pacific Marine Expo, etc. Prepare materials for events including action items and ensure appropriate staffing for events.

  4. Promotional Gear: Assist with the development of AMCC gear such as t-shirts, bags etc. Promote the sale of gear, organize and track inventory.

  5. Volunteers: Work with Development and Engagement Director to support volunteer engagement in AMCC’s efforts and events, build AMCC’s team of volunteers, and regularly identify opportunities for engagement. Appropriately acknowledge and thank volunteers.

Development, Fundraising & Donor Engagement: ~30%

  1. Support the functioning of AMCC’s giving programs and organization membership. This includes working with the Development and Engagement Director to execute regular renewal mailings, annual and special appeals, and maintain the membership database.

  2. Support AMCC’s annual cash raffle including securing the needed permits, ensuring regulations are followed. Promote and oversee ticket sales including working with the board.

  3. Support AMCC fundraising events including our annual Ocean Boogies and others to be identified. This includes soliciting donations for auctions, organizing food, entertainment, promotion etc.

Local Seafood Sales/Catch of the Season Program: ~25%

  1. Assist Local Seafood Sales and Operations Manager with tasks associated with selling and delivering seafood to individual and wholesale customers. This will include sorting seafood, tracking inventory, being present on pickup days, answering customer inquiries, and tracking orders.

Operations and Administrative Support: ~10%

  1. Answer main office line and direct calls as necessary.

  2. Ensure the AMCC office is neat, orderly and well-functioning. Maintain equipment and supplies and serve as liaison for tech support for staff.

  3. Provide support to the Executive Director with supporting the Board of Directors including scheduling meetings, carrying out teleconferences and in-person board meetings.

  4. Assist with data backup and management systems for the organization including cloud backup for staff and getting all key documents on the network.
