Pacific halibut are vital to our economies and cultures in coastal Alaska. This famed flatfish currently faces a number of management challenges, as halibut populations in many parts of Alaska are in decline. AMCC is working to protect Alaska’s halibut by reducing halibut bycatch in trawl fisheries in the Bering Sea and in the Gulf of Alaska. The number of halibut that are caught as bycatch in the these trawl fisheries represents a significant source of halibut mortality that must be addressed.
AMCC is also collaborating with charter operators to develop best practices for careful release of halibut in the sport sector and make these recommendations widely available to the public. Learn more about our “Every Halibut Counts” Gentle Release Project.
