Address Ocean Acidification & Advance Energy Solutions
AMCC's work to address the critical issue of ocean acidification includes:
- Working with scientists, subsistence harvesters, fishermen and natural resource managers to understand the effects of ocean acidification;
- Calling on fishery managers to develop new approaches to management that foster ecosystem resilience and that apply the precautionary principle to decisions.
- Sharing sound science with coastal Alaskans and engaging coastal residents in sharing their local knowledge;
- Supporting scientific research needed to understand and anticipate the impacts of ocean acidification on Alaska's fisheries;
- Catalyzing innovations in vessel energy efficiency that support the seafood industry in addressing its own carbon footprint while improving the bottom line.
New! Spring 2012
AMCC has released a report entitled Ocean Acidification & Alaska's Fisheries: Views and Voices of Alaska’s Fishermen, Marine Industries and Coastal Residents. The report authored by AMCC's Fisheries Program Director, Rachel Donkersloot, PhD, is the product of community roundtable discussions on ocean acidification held in Homer, Kodiak and Dillingham this winter. The publication reveals that while it’s not yet known exactly how ocean acidification will affect specific fisheries, it’s a clear threat to the ocean food web which our economies and communities depend on. The report is intended to support ongoing discussion about how Alaskans want to be involved in research, adaptation to change and solutions. AMCC also submitted the report as a contribution to the National CIimate Assessment process.
